Israeli President Shimon Peres' state visit to Canada began on Sunday (06/05/12), during this trip he plans to take part in a variety of public and private meetings.

Shimon Peres started off his visit in Ottawa, meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Harper. During this meeting, Peres announced that Canada has been “an extraordinary friend” to Israel and that “I carry in my heart the feeling that Canada is a continent of friendliness, displaying support and care”.

This visit by Shimon Peres, whose tour includes stops in Ontario and Quebec, follows on from Prime Minister short stay in Ottawa in March.

Despite Peres’ generous comments during his visit to Prime Minister Harper, the Huffington Post has reported that “the Conservative government has drawn considerable criticism for dropping Canada's traditional, self-styled ‘honest broker’ role that supported both Palestinian and Israeli ambitions in the region.”

Shimon Peres’ visit to Canada is just one of the recent trips the 88 year old statesman has made this year. Despite his age, Shimon Peres frequently visits international leaders to strengthen Israel’s diplomatic links.

When we interviewed Peres extensively for our second film, ‘The Price of Kings: Shimon Peres’, we found that the veteran politician was still driven by his desire to work: “I think the most interesting thing in life is to work. More than anything else.”
